Staying informed when the internet is down

Updated October 2026

When the internet goes down, you still want to know what is happening. Here is how, without relying on Wi-Fi.

Emergency Alerts

Emergency Alerts are a free UK Government service that warns you of a danger to life nearby, such as severe flooding. They arrive on compatible 4G and 5G phones and tablets, with a loud siren-like sound even if your phone is on silent.

We suggest leaving them switched on. You can see or change the setting by searching your phone's settings for "emergency alerts".

A battery or wind-up radio

If the internet goes down, a radio still works. Local and national stations broadcast updates during emergencies. Keep spare batteries with it, or choose a wind-up model.

Weather warnings

Check the Met Office for weather warnings when storms are forecast, so you can charge things and fill a flask before the power goes.
